The Agate

Saint Hildegard gives a poetic description of her formation: “Agate is born on a sandy beach stretching from the east to the south. When the water drops and the sand is uncovered, it is penetrated by the ardour of the sun, so that it takes on the brilliance of a precious stone”. (Physica ch XVI)

Saint Hildegarde mentions many different properties and uses of the agate. In order to choose the best stone it is therefore necessary to know its use beforehand. To heat it up or to put it in water, polished stones are preferred. For direct contact with the skin, which gives wisdom, a pendant or necklace is very suitable.

According to St. Hildegard, the agate is also useful to discourage thieves in houses.
